About Sphinxes

The Sphinx of Atlantis was one of the many monstrosities created during the age of shadow, and many believe him to be a prototype for the human race, as where the Atlanteans. His master made him his highest servant and closest advisor, even if he was not his most powerful creation. The other sphinxes, it is said, where created by the shadow only it for, while their spirits where actually the first to be called in from outside the universe, called by the shadow as a joke upon his servant. For he desired them to be created as his consorts, but they would have nothing to do with him, would not even speak. And he demanded them to speak, and threatened, until in rage he turned them to the same stone as his heart, and still they would not speak, though he knew they could, and so he never returned to that island, and destroyed in fury much of the earth, until even the shadow felt compelled to restrain him.

After his master passed on, the sphinx felt it his duty to see to the human race. With lies and cunning he fooled each man and woman into believing that they where personally responsible for the death of god, twisting it in their minds and at the same time blaming the first magician. And thus she could not come among them. And the people where so ashamed they could not tell their children what they believed they had done, and changed the stories slightly. From all this comes the legends of Adam and Eve, pandora's box, and many others. But the Egyptians, at least, knew some of the true story.

But the first magician found the sphinx at last and with great power came upon him, and he fled before her face, which was more terrible to behold in her fury than any beheld before. And he hid on an island he had created for this purpose, and found the Atlanteans already there. And so great was his fear that he never left it again, and created a great and terrible weapon to defend himself. But the first magician was content to be free of his interference, and took no notice of him for many incarnations.

The Sphinx ruled over Atlantis for over 1000 years, playing with his subjects lives like a cat will a mouse or piece of string, sometimes seeming to die, and ruling in secret, and then returning to ravage his terrified subjects.

He had developed a custom of coming forth from his temple every few decades to impress the Alanteans with his power, breathing flames upon some and tearing others. And yet they all waited beside the great road and watched, such was his power over them. But this time there was somebody in his path, where nobody dared go.

For the first magician had been born again. And though her power had by this time passed into many people, and she desired it no more. Her desire only was to travel the earth and see the many things her predecessors had done, and speak in secret to their descendants. For she desired to be as an ordinary person, to see what effect her actions had had upon the world. But one day in her travels she came upon the island where the sphinxes had been turned to stone. And they told her many secrets, the first person to hear them speak. And then they all began to speak at once, and the world began to spin. And she found herself upon a road, not knowing how she had come there. And thus, finally, she and the Sphinx where face to face again. And she knew her work was unfinished.

But the Sphinx did not recognize her, and ordered the guards to drag her away to the halls of torment. But each one that tried to touch her was consumed by flames. The sphinx then leapt upon her, but could not catch her, and suddenly she was sitting on his back. Then he spread his wings and flew up in rage, impotently trying to throw her from his back, and soon both disappeared from view. And when the sphinx finally returned he was alone, but he was so meek that he allowed himself to be lead on a chain to his temple, and was forevermore imprisoned there.

The sphinxes thus had their revenge. And though stone they remained, they did not stay upon their island, but spread themselves across the earth, and to some few they may speak. But no one may know where they shall appear.

Upon his fiery spirit rode the magician, and thus she left this world forever, or so it is believed. But his body and twisted mind where trapped with Atlantis in it's fall, and to this day he remains trapped in it's ruin, endlessly screaming in madness.....
